We arrived in Wellawatte, Colombo, from London UK, about 3am so didnt wake till late, heard commotion outside and grabbed camera. The railway is about 4-5 metres above sea level. Didnt realise the significance till later watching TV world news. Gives me shivers because if we had gotten to Sri lanka a few days earlier we would have been down south in the worst hit areas. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, one of the most popular attractions in Sri Lanka, is 80km northeast of Colombo. It is among the biggest herds of captive elephants in the world.
Pinnawela elephant Orphanage is the home for about 60 elephants, out of which many are baby elephants found, abandoned or orphaned in the wild. They are being taken care, fed and trained by the wild life authorities. The best time to visit is during the feeding times, when one will have the opportunity of seeing the baby elephants being bottle-fed , A place you will really enjoy and never forget. Started in 1972 the Elephant Orphanage was relocated to at the present site in 1975
