We arrived in Wellawatte, Colombo, from London UK, about 3am so didnt wake till late, heard commotion outside and grabbed camera. The railway is about 4-5 metres above sea level. Didnt realise the significance till later watching TV world news. Gives me shivers because if we had gotten to Sri lanka a few days earlier we would have been down south in the worst hit areas. A popular tourist destination, Sigiriya is also renowned for its ancient paintings (frescos), which are reminiscent of the Ajanta Caves of India. The Sigiriya was built during the reign of King Kassapa I (AD 477 495), and it is one of the seven World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka.
